Scenic Tours for Classic Cars, Replicas & Kit Cars

What is RoadRunner Tours?

RoadRunner Tours is run by David Butcher and is based between Bonn and Koblenz in West Germany.

After organising a large number of day and weekend scenic tours for assorted car clubs and friends, and having been on various group motoring holidays organised by others over the years, I felt very strongly that I could use our experience to offer an even better tour.

My aim is to provide a unique motoring holiday on which you will look back with fond memories, covering (wherever possible) a maximum of 200 kilometres (125 miles) per day hopping between comfortable hotels on scenic routes, allowing ample time to stop and take photographs or video, or simply watch the rest of the world go by in a café for a while. tulip route book ( Kb) Simple "tulip" diagrams with accurate distances (in miles and kilometres between the tulip waypoints) and detailed route descriptions (in either English or German, your choice!) plus colour photocopies of the relevant maps will be supplied to guide you easily around the Tour, with the possibility to shorten the distance between overnight stops on more direct roads (in the unlikely event of difficulties with your car, or just laziness), interspersed with "non-travelling" days in the most interesting areas to allow more detailed exploration or relaxation.

The standard of hotels used is generally 3* or 4*, but will vary from tour to tour, and accommodation is on a bed-and-breakfast only basis. Evening meals are not generally included, but during the tour, at least one group dinner will be organised and is included in the tour price. Throughout the tour, every effort will be made to cater for people who have special dietary requirements, those who prefer non-smoking rooms, etc.

Because I make every effort to offer the best possible individual service, I can only cater for between 5 and 40 cars on each tour - so if you are interested in taking part in any tour that I am running, please contact me as soon as possible for a booking status report. If I am not running a tour to an area, or with a theme that you would like, please don't hesitate to suggest this to me!

A RoadRunner Tour is NOT meant to be a test of your or your vehicle's staying power or speed. There are NO timed sections, NO controls, NO fancy dress evenings (what do you mean, those are your casual clothes?) and NO pressures - it is a holiday, with the emphasis on touring!

Hence, you only need to pack up your car, drive to the pre-determined meeting point (where the necessary route books, maps, etc. will be handed out and explained), and then set off on your RoadRunner Tour - no fuss, no hassle, just enjoyable leisurely motoring through interesting areas, with the great company of your fellow tour-ists.

Shortly after the tour is over, every participant will receive a commemorative photograph of their vehicle taken somewhere en route (suitable for framing), and can visit this web site to see photographs of the other vehicles and notable scenery.

Don't forget, I offer a Loyalty Bonus in the form of a discount off any future RoadRunner Tour bookings - initially a 5% discount, but increasing to 10% off all tours booked after your fifth tour.
Approved Car Clubs may also be eligible for discounts, if a sufficient number of members book at the same time (5% discount per member for 5 bookings on any one tour, up to 10% discount per member for 10 or more simultaneous bookings) - please check via e-mail for eligibility.

Oh, and one final point - being a car nut myself, I insist that you take part on your RoadRunner Tour in a Classic Car - that is to say, a vehicle of any type manufactured before 31st December 1983. Kit Cars and Replicas of classic cars are also eligible, as are any vehicles of special interest built after 31st December 1983. However, modern Euroboxes and rice-cookers will probably NOT be eligible for the Tour (unless you can convince me that they are potential future classics, or I need to make up the numbers to run the tour!). This is to ensure that both your fellow participants and the folk in the areas that we will be visiting can share in your enjoyment of the motoring cars.
If in doubt, please contact me by e-mail to check whether your vehicle will be accepted at the discretion of RoadRunner Tours.

What is a Roadrunner?

roadrunner (22 Kb) A Roadrunner (or more correctly, Geococcyx californiana ) is a slender bird with a bushy crest and a long, sturdy tail and streaked plumage. Between 20 and 24 inches (50 to 60 cms) long, it lives in grasslands, brushy areas, deserts, and open woodlands, between sea level and 7,500 feet (2,300 meters) above sea level in the south-western United States and Mexico, in partly arid or dry open places where there are scattered pinyons, junipers, cactuses and rocks to provide cover. During the extreme heat of the day, they will seek shade and be more active during cooler times. They prey on insects, lizards, gophers, mice, bird eggs, scorpions, rattlesnakes, grasshoppers, crickets, tarantulas, plus fruit and seeds.
The Roadrunner usually builds a nest made of sticks, lined with leaves, grass, feathers, snakeskin, roots, and manure flakes in a small low tree, thicket, or cactus clump. It lays between 2 and 6 white eggs with a chalky yellowish coat, which hatch in 18 to 20 days.
The roadrunner is not a quiet bird. It crows and chuckles, coos like a dove, and produces a clacking sound by rolling its mandibles together.
Although the roadrunner can fly well, it prefers to run to catch prey and also to escape predators, and can easily reach speeds of about 15 miles per hour (25 kph). They are shy and spend most of their time on the ground.
The nickname Roadrunner was earnt a long time ago, when these birds would run on the road alongside horse-drawn carriages. Other nicknames are chaparral, cock of the desert, ground cuckoo and paisano.

Roadrunner Song

I'm Steve, and I'm Ed,
And we're Barenaked Ladies

You're on a highway and roadrunner goes "Beep, beep"
Just step aside or you might end up in a heap
Roadrunner roadrunner runs on the road all day
Even the coyote can't make him change his ways

Roadrunner, that coyote's after you
Roadrunner, if he catches you, you're through

That coyote's really a crazy clown
When will he learn that he never can hold you down?
Roadrunner roadrunner never bothers anyone
Runnin' down the road is his idea of havin' fun

Roadrunner, that coyote's after you
Roadrunner, if he catches you, you're through

Roadrunner, that coyote's after you
Roadrunner, if he catches you, you're through
If he catches you, you're through
If he catches you, you're through
