After leaving New Orleans, we headed north past Manchac to Ponchatoula - Strawberry Capital of the World ....
.... and then east to Mandeville before heading south and across the Lake Pontchartrain bridge (at 24 miles, the longest
bridge in the world), and back into New Orleans.
From New Orleans we crossed over the Mississippi River and continued south, past Belle Chasse and took the free ferry across
the Mississippi River again at West Point a la Hache.
Near Point a la Hache, there is a large open-face coal mine. We were almost arrested for taking this photograph, since the
security team thought that we were planning an act of terrorism !!
In the St. Bernard State Park, we saw this otter swimming amongst the weed ....
.... and as the light was failing, this armadillo came out to feed in the muddy undergrowth.
We then drove on to the Days Inn, Slidell (235 miles, 09:00 - 19:30, US $ 40,11 / Euro xx,xx)
March 26th 2003 - overcast, showers, warm
From Slidell, we drove into the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, where we saw this snake ....
.... which was ca. 2 metres long. We later established that it was a deadly Cottenmouth !!
This bird was sitting out the heavy rain showers,
as was the large Marsh Hare.
A cypress swamp in the rain.
We then drove over the Rigolets Bridge to the Fort Pike State Park,
and shortly afterwards crossed from Louisiana into Mississippi, before stopping at the Ramada Inn, Gulf Port (109 miles,
08:30 - 18:00, ca. US $ 40).
