Motor Show, Essen, Germany
29th November to 8th December 2002
We don't usually attend the Motor Show in Essen - rather than competing with the International Motor Show at Frankfurt
(which concentrates on the latest new cars), Essen is aimed at the "Tuning brigade". Most of the visitors here can
be heard shouting "Borrrraayyyyy, koooolllll" whilst they drool and slobber all over the latest paint jobs and
bits of plastic that they could buy and stick on to their Golf GTI, BMW 316i, or whatever - in an attempt to give their
boring pride and joy a slightly more individual look. There are also a number of very scantily-clad young ladies walking
around trying to tempt people to part with their money for a new set of rims or a chromed rear silencer, but I didn't go to
look at these sights - honestly!.
One of the specialist German classic car magazines quietly mentioned that there would be a display of World Rally Cars (from
1973 to 2002), and better still - AC Cars would have a stand to celebrate 40 years of Cobras. Enough said, we're on our way ....
A good selection of other AC models were on display, including a ca. 1915 Sports (?) ....
.... ca. 1938 Ace 16/66 Roadster ....
.... ca. 1955 Ace ....
.... 1958 Ace Bristol Le Mans ....
.... ca. 1960 Aceca Coupe ....
.... and this ca. 1972 428 Frua, ....
.... before we came to the Cobras.
Should someone tell this Gentleman that Cobras don't have a bonnet release handle tucked away under the dashboard?
Aahhhh, that's better! Whenever a bonnet is opened, men swarm towards the car like bees to the honey pot!
What! A replica on the AC stand? This Daytona replica had apparently cost US$230,000 to build.
Near the AC Cars stand was this 289 (CSX2236). It was first invoiced to Shelby American on 20th November 1963 and
sold in March 1964 for US$5633,75 (including various accessories), it changed owners in 1989 for US$125,000, and is now for
sale by its current owner Jimmy Canal for Euro 216,500. This is the Cobra 289 that is used as the logo for the "Canal
Jimmy" Television Station in France.
This 427 replica looks much better in this photograph than in real life, but despite its sad condition, the owner was asking
Euro 49,500 for the car!
More impressive were the 427 replicas on Christian Novaks stand ....
.... including his race-trim CN-427 and the trophies that he has won with this car in the German YoungTimer Race Series.
How about the front end of a Cobra 427 (or bike fairings) to hang on the living room wall? ....
.... or a 1:18 scale 427 model with airbrushed snake-skin and Cobra head ....
