All members of the "289 Register" were cordially invited by the ORC (Oldtimer Replica Club, based in Germany - the
"Oldtimer" hopefully refers to the cars, not the club members!) to take part in their superb 24th Annual
Meeting from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd June inclusive.
The base for this event was the 4* Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Waldmünchen - just inside Germany, only 2,5 miles from the
border with the Czech Republic (where you can tank up with incredibly cheap petrol, even when compared to German prices).
The hotel is modern and relatively new, with double-bed appartments and larger maisonette appartments (split over two levels
with two bedrooms, if two couples want to share a larger appartment), an indoor heated swimming pool and sauna, and free
covered parking for over 80 cars. The ORC negotiated a discounted rate with the hotel of only Euro 35 (£ 22) per person per
night (including breakfast), and the event itself cost only Euro 90 (£ 57) per person. This included all food, buffets,
coffee, cakes, entrance fees and gifts from the time of arrival (Thursday afternoon) until departure (Sunday morning).
(public holiday in Germany) - arrival up to 18:00, champagne reception and welcoming drinks before
dinner at 19:00
One 289 Register member from UK broke their journey with us on Wednesday 18th June, prior to driving the remaining 335 miles on
to Waldmünchen the following day in a three-Cobra convoy ....
.... we led the way in our BRA 289, closely followed by Nigel Brackenbury and Steve "the Stag" Wrighton in Nigel's
Unique Autocraft 427, plus the 289 Register member from UK in their metallic blue Brightwheel Viper 427 - all seen here at our lunch stop in
Gemunden.
Remarkably, this was the first time that the 289 Register member had ever driven a car outside of UK (i.e. on the wrong side of the
road), and they chose a baptism of fire by driving their Cobra right across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany before
finally reaching the Czech Republic (which was not even half of their total distance of 1788 miles covered on this trip).
Once we all finally arrived at the Bayerisch Hof Hotel, we were greeted with a welcoming champagne and orange juice
reception, soon to be followed by a huge buffet dinner, after which each participant was called up to the front of the
dining hall and introduced to the rest of the group, and presented with an ORC metal plaque and an engraved glass souvenir !
panoramic tour through the Bohemian and Bavarian Forests (outward journey through the Czech Republic,
return through Germany - with 125 miles of hairpin bends and hill-climbing). Guides on motorbikes will ensure that no one
strays off the route, and a treasure hunt should keep us amused. En route we will be stopping to sample cakes, allegedly big
enough to use as chocks to stop lorries from rolling away! On the return route we will be visiting a typical Czech market
(with best quality "Oldtimer Replica Club" goods from Versace, Diesel, Calvin Klein, Boss, Nike, Adidas, etc.) and
a nearby Duty Free Shop - i.e. perfume for Euro 5 (£ 3) instead of Euro 25 (£ 16), and 200 cigarettes for Euro 13 (£ 8)
instead of Euro 30 (£ 19). We should be back in the hotel at 18:00, to freshen up for a buffet at 20:00 (with a welcome
greeting and gifts from the Mayor of Waldmünchen - the only town in Germany that lies within the Bohemian Forest).
The day started off with very heavy rain, so only a few participants stopped at the Vietnamese Market just across the border
into the Czech Republic, to stock up with cheap cigarettes and alcohol.
However, the next stop was more popular - most of the 70 cars filled up with fuel (30% cheaper than in Germany, and over 40%
cheaper than in UK was an offer that no Cobra driver could pass up), and whilst waiting for the others ....
.... we spotted this Trabant towing a hay cart with pitch fork ....
.... and this advert for the nearby Kobra Club !!
Although the hood on our BRA 289 is not particularly waterproof, it still offered us significantly more protection than the
Porsche 550 Spider occupants in front of us could enjoy !!
The wet weather meant that the adhesive holding the front rally plaque on the bonnet soon lost its grip.
After a short drive, we arrived in the town of Domazlice, where we parked all the cars in the Market Square for the locals
to admire ....
.... whilst we warmed up by drinking cups of hot coffee. Alternatively, the Bugatti Bar was open for some stronger drinks !!
The bear on the bonnet of the Bugatti replica of Horst Lange was soaked.
The rain had already stopped, so the braver amongst us took their tops off (the cars) ....
.... whilst others cleaned some of the dirt off their car.
It was soon time to return to the cars ....
.... and leave the Market Square in convoy ....
.... via the stone archway through the town wall.
After driving through some small villages ....
.... and along lanes with superb views ....
.... we arrived at the lunch stop - Horska Chata, Hamry - high up in the Sumava Park region of the Bohemian Forest.
